When choosing a domain name, you will always want to begin with the end in mind.  What this means is to define your goals for the domain that you are creating.

It often helps to imagine marketing on the internet as funneling information.

Prospects enter at the top.

Awareness, Opinion, Consideration, Preference, Purchase

Customers exit at the bottom.  Of course, if you set your business up properly, customers will be encouraged and rewarded for doing repeat business with you, which will turn them into clients.

As a result, I often recommend a strategy of using multiple domains and websites to effectively reach potential clients who are at different parts of the marketing cycle.

Clients at the top of the funnel may have never heard of your company or the services and products that you provide.  What they do understand though, is the problem that they are currently dealing with.

The particular problem is the reason that they are searching the internet.  They are searching for solutions.  A typical client will go to google.com and enter something similar to  the following keywords:

  1. Sell my house fast
  2. Buying a house with bad credit
  3. Lose 20 pounds fast
  4. How to get a job
  5. How to get my ex back

The first domain that your client will see should be one discussing the problem that they are searching for.  Ideally, you would choose a domain name that includes the keywords that your client is searching for.  This helps you show up at the top of the search results.

For example, you may purchase a domain like www.sellmyhousefast.com.  If your potential client goes to Google and searches for “Sell My House Fast”, then your domain name would be an exact match.  Even a close match give you a better chance of appearing higher in the search results.

You will want to appear on the first page in the top 5 search results since they get the majority of the clicks from searchers.
